How You Can Donate to the Efforts of Superstorm Sandy

How You Can Donate to the Efforts of Superstorm Sandy

Good day to you.  As you know, Superstorm Sandy made impact with the United States northeast coastline on October 29, 2012.  It’s estimated 6.2 million people initially lost power as a result of the storm and early monetary damages are projected to be up to $18 million (Source).

Today, over a month later, the needs of the Sandy-stricken are no less.  The needs of monies, supplies, and volunteers are huge.  While there are many charities and vehicles for donation and supply movement, there are two entities that stand out in my mind in regard to effectiveness and efficiency.

The first entity is Occupy Sandy.  Occupy Sandy has raised almost $500,000 for people-powered disaster relief (Source).  They have even incorporated the use of multiple Amazon wedding registries like this one!  If you would like to donate or volunteer for Occupy Sandy, they may be contacted in a variety of ways:

·         Internet:  http://interoccupy.net/occupysandy/

·         Twitter:  @520ClintonOS or @OccupySandy

·         E-mail:  [email protected]

The second entity is the American Red Cross.  This website is where you may contact and/ or donate to this organization.  You may also contact them on Twitter via @RedCross.

As a bonus, there is an up-coming event scheduled on December, 12, 2012 – a benefit concert to aid the survivors of Sandy called “12 12 12” to benefit the Robin Hood Relief Fund.  Here’s a web link for more information in regard to that concert:  http://www.121212concert.org/.  This event will be aired on 12/12/12 at 7:30 PM EST, so check your local television listings.  It will be also be broadcast via Radio and the Internet.

Personally, as a celiac, I cannot imagine that I would have enough gluten-free resource stored to outlast this natural disaster.  Know I’ve personally communicated with Occupy Sandy and Red Cross and have been assured celiac and allergen needs are being met.  I hope you find it in your heart to donate as much as you can for the survivors of Sandy.

Research, educate, and advocate all which will help others in a natural disaster.  Next time, that natural disaster might be in your back yard.

Peace be with you.
