Have you ever eaten a food you thought would be gluten-free, and then found out you were glutened? What food were you eating when the cross-contamination happened? For me, it was some Aunt Jemima cornmeal that was supposed to be just cornmeal. That's when I learned the hard way about cross-contamination. I had difficulty breathing, and nearly passed out, left to lie in my bed for the rest of the night!
Have you ever experienced cross-contamination?
Before FALCPA was put in place our son experienced cross contact due to an undeclared allergen. He did have to go to the hospital but was fine after receiving the proper medication. When we called the manufacturer to inquire about ingredients and tell them what happened their response was to send up coupons. Let me just say I was not happy with that response.
I once purchased a box of "gluten free" cereal that was supposed to be a version of honey nut Cheerios, but made out of other grains. Because the print was so small and faint, I initially failed to notice the warning that the cereal had been processed on the same equipment as wheat. I spent a full day in bed and it took two weeks for me to begin properly absorbing my thyroid meds again.
